My Favourite Christian Books on Romantic Relationships

Hello friends! If you’re dreaming of marriage someday, you are probably curious about romantic relationships. Where should we go for advice on romance? First, we should seek counsel from wise parents and pastors. But we can also learn from the wisdom of others through Christian books on romantic relationships. Here are my personal favorites…

Read on for my top 6 Christian books on romantic relationships.

1. The Bible (The Best Book on Romantic Relationships)

If you’re a born again Christian, then you know that the Bible is more than just a moral handbook. It’s a light for our feet in every situation we might face in life…including romance.

The Bible is filled with tender and poignant love stories. Read about Jacob’s love for Rachel in Genesis 29. Savor the book of Ruth, a true Cinderella story. Marvel at the grace of God that provided a wife for Isaac in Genesis 24. And read Song of Solomon with wonder (and maybe a blush or two as well!)

If you study these love stories, you will learn much about how God views romance and how to do it right. However, you can also study principles in the Bible which would apply to romantic relationships. Study how to find the will of God, purity, how to love others, good communication, husband/wife relationships, and more. If you’re not sure where to start, ask your pastor for a list of verses to study. He’ll be happy to help!

2. I Kissed Dating Goodbye

Filled with entertaining stories and illustrations, this is one of my favorite Christian books on romantic relationships. In this book, Joshua Harris teaches young adults to avoid casual dating for short-term pleasure. Rather, he challenges them to prepare for marriage and only date/court for the purpose of possible marriage.

This Christian book on romantic relationships includes some fantastic chapters on purity, guarding your heart, developing Christlike love, and understanding God’s forgiveness. It’s one of the best books I’ve read on boy-girl relationships, and I highly recommend it.

3. Before You Meet Prince Charming

Before You Meet Prince Charming, Christian books on romantic relationships

Written by Sarah (Mally) Hancock, this book encourages young ladies to pursue radiant purity. In a world of immorality, we can be different and shine as lights by a pure lifestyle. Throughout the book, Sarah shares the story of a fictional princess who encounters dangers and temptations and must seek God’s help to stay pure.

She shares lots of practical advices and tips on everything from safe Internet usage to how to deal with a crush. She encourages girls to guard their hearts and minds and build good relationships with their parents.

This book is especially helpful for girls ages 12-18, but its principles apply to all ages. However, if you are a young adult who is ready to enter a serious relationship, I would recommend one of the other books as more applicable to your life stage.

Available on Amazon.

4. Preparing to Be A Help Meet

Preparing to be a Help Meet, Christian books on romantic relationships

This book is one that I’ve picked up again and again when I felt lonely and needed a little encouragement! It’s full of encouragement, practical advice, and true love stories of Christian couples who did it God’s way. So much fun!

Debi Pearl is a grandmother, mother, and happily married wife who has so much wisdom to impart. She teaches you about different types of men, how to get to know guys without flirting, finding God’s will for who to marry, and more.

Throughout the book, you can read comments from 3 young men who read the book. It’s so helpful to get the male perspective on different issues and hear how they agree/disagree with the author. It is sometimes quite enlightening, too!

This Christian book on romantic relationships is written from a heart of love and wisdom, and I highly recommend it.

Available on Amazon.

5. For Women Only (18 and up)

For Women Only by Shaunti Feldhahn

Although this book is not specifically one of the Christian books on romantic relationships, it’s very helpful for understanding men. Written by Shaunti Feldhahn, this book was based on professional research with over 1600 men.

It includes 8 surprising truths about how most men think and act. While it is written in the context of a marital relationship, you can learn general principles that can helpful in any relationships, including with your dad and brothers.

For example, men have a natural instinct to be the providers for themselves and their families. That’s why unemployment and even retirement can be emotionally devastating for men. Men feel a burden to provide which weighs heavily upon them.

In addition, the author includes helpful tips for how to support men in relation to these areas. She encourages women to respect, follow, and build up their husbands as they face the challenges of life.

This book does have a chapter on men’s visual nature and a chapter on marital intimacy, which are discreet but more suited for mature readers. That’s why I recommend this book for ages 18 and up.

Available on Amazon.

6. Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen (18 and up)

Get Married: What Women Can Do to Help It Happen by Candice Watters

If you are a young adult who is ready to consider a serious relationship, you’ll love this book! I found it to be tremendously encouraging and helpful. First, Candice Watters explains how wanting to be married is a good thing. Most of us are not called to a life of celibate service like the apostle Paul.

Candice challenges the reader to plug into a local church and find an older woman to be a Titus 2 mentor. She also provides practical relationship advice (including an awesome Q&A section at the end of the book). And she encourages young ladies to be wise stewards of their time, health, and resources.

One of my favorite parts of the book was Candice’s personal love story, told by her husband at the end of the book. It’s hilarious and sweet, too!

Available on Amazon.

  1. Two of my very favorite books, Before You Meet Prince Charming, and Preparing to Be A Help Meet!!! I have read both of these numerous times, and plan to add the others to my “To Read” list, which grows longer by the day. 🙈 Also, there is a companion “work book” available for Before You Meet Prince Charming that is excellent; I went through this book when I was 15-16 and it was SO helpful.
Wonderful post as always, Claudine! Thank you so much for your ministry! 💕

Yes, I enjoyed those two very much as well. Thank you so much for the recommendation, Sara! Great idea! Praise the Lord! 💕 Thank you for your writing ministry as well!

  2. I haven’t read some of these! I read I Kissed Dating Goodbye and didn’t care much for it, to be honest! I agreed with a lot of what he said, but it seemed shallow. I’m so picky with books..ha! Have you read Elisabeth Elliot’s books Passion & Purity and Quest For Love? I 1,000% recommend..ha! I am always on the lookout for good books from thrift stores 😉 Do more posts like these!

Thank you so much for reading and commenting, Elizabeth! Yes, I did read Passion and Purity but I was honestly a little disappointed with it. But I did appreciate her focus on surrendering the timeline of her love life to the Lord. That is so important! I haven’t read Quest for Love. Yes, I also LOVE shopping for books from thrift stores…there are so many good finds! Thanks for the encouragement! 💕
