Ever since she was a four-year-old dressing up as a princess, every girl has wanted to be beautiful. However, between ages 4 and 14, many girls start to doubt their own beauty and worth. According to our culture, beauty wears a size 0, and she always has perfect hair, four-inch heels, and a blindingly white smile. Is this true beauty, or is it a cheap counterfeit?
Tucked in the pages of God’s Word are 6 hallmarks of a truly beautiful woman. (Spoiler alert: there isn’t a measurement or eye colour in the bunch!) When you seek to develop these, with God’s help, you can develop true beauty that will never fade or wither.
Here are 6 must-know beauty secrets for Christian girls.
1. A Thankful Heart
“Do all things without murmurings and disputings: that ye may be blameless and harmless…in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;” (Philippians 2:14-15, emphasis added)
Have you ever known anyone who just bubbled over with joy and thanksgiving? Someone who rarely said a negative word, who was filled with a quiet satisfaction and a ready smile? Such people have a thankful heart and true beauty. No matter how hard their life is, they will thank God for His goodness and appreciate every little gift He gives.
On the other hand, complaining throws an ugly mask on an otherwise attractive girl. Those who complain, argue, and murmur about every little thing are developing ugliness in their heart. And, sooner or later, it will show up on their faces!
If you want to be more beautiful, avoid complaining like the plague. And practice giving thanks!
2. A Joyful Attitude
Sincere thankfulness is the seed of joy. When you set thankfulness on repeat in your words, you will set joy on repeat in your heart.
Several years ago, world traveller and missionary Rebekah Pearl conducted an unofficial survey on joy. In more than a dozen countries with very different cultures, she asked the men, “What is the most valuable and attractive attribute a woman can have in your culture?” Over and over, they responded, “Happy, joyful, cheerful, good attitude, smiling, etc.”
3. Praising God
“Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.” (Psalm 33:1)
If you’re a born again Christian, then you know firsthand that God is an incredibly good and gracious Father. And, as His children, we owe Him everything. He deserves our unceasing praise and thanks.
According to this verse, praise is “comely” for the upright. That Old English word means, “pleasant to look at, attractive.”
Wait a minute, you might think. You’re telling me that praising God is going to make me prettier?
Yes! That’s exactly right! Because when you forget about yourself and focus on praising God, you will get a little of His glory reflected back at you.
Paul described this mystery to the Christians at Colosse, “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” (2 Corinthians 3:18)
When we seek to put the spotlight on God, He will give us true beauty that the world just can’t compete with. He will glorify us with an inner radiance and joy. What an amazing gift!
If you want to be more beautiful, praise God.
4. A Meek and Quiet Spirit
“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.” (1 Peter 3:3-4, emphasis added)
In these classic verses on Biblical womanhood, Peter shares a true beauty secret that is becoming increasingly rare….a meek and quiet spirit. In today’s English, we could explain it as “a heart of trust and submission to God.”
It’s tempting to try to take control of every situation. And it’s tempting to rebel against authority and insist on our own way. It’s tempting to worry and fret about the future.
But a woman with true beauty has a meek and quiet spirit. She trusts that her heavenly Father knows best and is at work on her behalf. She obeys the authorities in her life with a joyful spirit.
5. A Kind Tongue
“She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” (Proverbs 31:26, emphasis added)
Have you ever seen a pretty girl who seemed charming until she opened her mouth, and sarcastic, mean comments came out? You don’t want to be that girl.
I know the tongue is hard to control. For goodness’ sakes, I have one, too! But, girls, we need to work on developing a kind tongue. Ask God to help you in this area. Here are a few ways you can practice kindness in your words.
- Be slow to speak (James 1:19). Ask yourself, “How would I feel if someone said this to me?”
- Give sincere compliments.
- Don’t criticize unnecessarily (as in, to someone you’re not supervising or advising). When you have to criticize, be gentle and sweet.
- Say thank you more than once a day. 😉
- Don’t speak negatively of anyone behind their back. Gently remind those who start to gossip, “Let’s not talk about her when she’s not here to defend herself.”
If you want to be beautiful, ask God to help you develop a kind tongue.
6. A Faithful Walk with God
“And it came to pass, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of testimony in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone while he talked with him.” (Exodus 34:29)
In this incredible passage, Moses has just spent 40 days and nights with God on Mount Sinai. He talked with God and received the Ten Commandments written by God’s own hand. When the children of Israel saw his face, they were frightened. They saw that Moses’ face shone with an unearthly glow.
As I mentioned earlier, knowing God has a remarkable effect on any girl. If she is seeking God, spending time in prayer and Bible study, and walking in obedience, she will increasingly reflect the glory of her Saviour. His joy will light her smile. His love will shine through her actions. His peace will sustain her through trials. And His strength will be shown through her weakness.
If you want to be beautiful, truly beautiful, then seek the Lord, and pray as Moses did in Psalm 90…
“And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.”
Psalm 90:17

I love posts/reminders like these! I know it can sound cliche at times, but all of these things really are true…and they’re Scriptural! I’ve seen so many women who had these attributes and it made all the difference in the world. The one I need to work on the most is probably criticism. I am very opinionated and stubborn and have a hard time being gracious with people or just letting things go. Wow, that sounds so awful to say! But it’s true. I can excuse it as just being honest, but the fact is this it’s not being meek and humble as I should be 🙂

I never really thought about outward beauty in the way you described it in the spiritual way. It is SO important to work on our relationship with Christ rather than material things. You don’t want to be the person that’s beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside. True beauty comes from Christ who shines His radiance through a person who is willing to shine for Him! 🙂
