The Best Curly Girl Approved Shampoos

Hello fellow curly girls! When you’re following the Curly Girl method, you know how important it is to choose the right hair products. You’ll want to avoid sulfates, drying alcohols, and damaging detergents. Today, I’m sharing 5 of the best Curly Girl approved shampoos.

Here are the best Curly Girl approved shampoos you should try.

1. Curly Girl Approved Cowash: As I Am Coconut Cowash

As I Am Coconut Cowash, best cowash for curly hair, shampoo for curly hair

If you’re new to the Curly Girl Method, you might be wondering, “What’s a cowash?” A cowash is basically a product that cleanses your hair AND provides moisture at the same time. It’s like a conditioner designed to get your hair clean.

Recommended by blogger Curly Cailin, this Curly Girl approved cowash is packed with amazing botanical ingredients like tangerine extract and coconut powder. It also contains Black Castor Oil, which helps hair grow long and luscious. It gently cleanses your curls without stripping away their natural oils. And it smells SO yummy!

This product is especially good for curly and coily hair types because it provides so much moisture. If you have low porosity hair, I recommend that you rotate it with another sulfate-free shampoo to avoid buildup. That’s what I do.

2. Live Clean Argan Oil Restorative Shampoo

This is the shampoo I always pack on trips and the one I can’t live without. It’s inexpensive, smells delicious, and works like a charm.

Because it contain sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, it’s not technically a Curly Girl approved shampoo. But, it does work well as a clarifying shampoo. Because my hair has low porosity, it’s prone to buildup. This shampoo helps my hair stay bouncy and fresh.

Its ingredients include grapeseed oil, olive oil, and 100% pure argan oil. You can purchase it at a grocery store or online at Amazon.

Because this shampoo is more clarifying, you should pair it with a moisture-rich conditioner like the Tresemme Botanique Nourish & Replenish Conditioner.

3. Curly Girl Approved Shampoo: SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo

When I read the label, “For Thick, Curly Hair,” I thought, “That’s me!” I bought both the shampoo and conditioner to try together, and I’ve been delighted with the results so far.

This shampoo left my hair soft, touchable, and full of bouncy curls. It provided gentle cleansing without removing all the natural oils. It’s definitely one of the best shampoos for curly hair I’ve tried.

The ingredient list is fantastic, too! It contains hydrating ingredients like coconut oil and neem oil. And it also includes silk protein and hibiscus extracts! The fragrance is sweet and coconutty (yes, that’s a word!)

Even better, SheaMoisture is a company with incredible values. They source their organic ingredients through fair trade and test products on humans, never animals. They even provide scholarships for minority students and business owners. Now that’s a company worth supporting! (Plus, they make amazing curly girl approved products!)

Recently, I’ve been using their Daily Hydration Shampoo and love it, too!

4. Kinky Curly Come Clean Natural Moisturizing Shampoo

This clarifying shampoo is packed with botanicals like sea kelp and mandarin orange extract. If your hair tends toward oiliness or product buildup or you have low porosity hair, this shampoo would be perfect for you. I recommend rotating it with a co-wash or moisturizing shampoo as this one can be drying. It’s perfect for a weekly or biweekly “reset” of your curls, especially if you use a lot of products.

5. Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Invigorating Shampoo

Formulated with essential oils, this shampoo will leave your hair and scalp tingling clean and fresh. It includes organic tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil. This shampoo will increase circulation to your scalp and cleanse it thoroughly. If you ever have dandruff or scalp flaking, this shampoo will help alleviate those issues. It’s a great choice for a curly hair shampoo!

About a year ago, my sister got some SheaMoisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Shine Shampoo (or maybe it was the conditioner. I can’t remember.) from our local Walmart. Even though I don’t have curly hair, i decided to try it out. The fragrance was AMAZING! I wouldn’t mind trying it again just for the scent. 🙂
