Tee-Owel: Hair Towel for Curly Hair + DISCOUNT CODE

Hello curly girls! If you’re following the Curly Girl Method, you know that everyday bath towels are a no-no for curly hair. Due to their rough texture, they can cause frizz and disrupt curl patterns. Instead, many curly girls use an old, soft t-shirt to dry their hair. One curly girl created something even better – the Tee-Owel. It’s a towel made of soft, stretchy t-shirt material, and it works beautifully for curly hair!

Read on for my honest review of Tee-Owels for curly hair (+ an exclusive discount code!)

What are Tee-Owels?

Tee-Owels were created in 2017 by curly girl Liz Girolamo, who wanted to protect her curls from frizz and damage. She created a towel made of organic cotton t-shirt material with a little stretch. These towels have become a favourite of curly girls around the world! They are available in two lengths – one for short-medium hair and one for long hair.

How to Use Tee-Owels

First, lay the Tee-Owel out horizontally on a flat surface. Using both hands, scrunch your curls upward toward your head, bend over, and gently put your head onto the towel. Slide your hands out, and gently pull the front of the towel around your forehead. Then, wrap the other end of the towel around the back of your head. Gently knot the ends together in front like a turban.

Leave it in for 30 minutes or more to allow the towel to soak up as much moisture as possible.

I wouldn’t recommend wearing it to bed, as this could cause your hair to stay wet for too long and lead to hygral fatigue (read more about that here).

After removing the towel, you can let your hair air dry or diffuse it for more definition.

What type of shirt is best for drying curly hair?

Many curly girls like to use an old t-shirt for drying curly hair. But, if you have a lot of hair, you may have a hard time fitting it all in and tying the sides.

That’s why the Tee-Owel works so well for drying curly hair!

  • Here are a few types of shirts you should NOT use to dry curly hair:
  • Silk or satin shirts (They don’t cause frizz but also absorb very little moisture.)
  • Roughly textured sweaters (Just like bath towels, they break up your curl pattern.)
  • Polyester shirts (They don’t absorb moisture well.)

Instead, try a soft, absorbent cotton shirt or a Tee-Owel for curly hair.

Benefits of using a t-shirt towel for hair

Here are a few benefits of using a t-shirt or Tee-owel to dry your hair.

  • Better curl definition: your curls will clump together better and form a stronger cast
  • Protection from damage: your hair is most vulnerable when wet, but a Tee-Owel will protect it from breakage
  • Less frizz
  • Faster drying time
