6 Must-Know Tips for Thick, Frizzy Curly Hair

Hello lovelies! If you have thick, curly hair, like me, your hair needs a lot of moisture to stay healthy and beautiful. If I don’t condition my hair properly, it looks frizzy and dry. Looking to have healthy, luscious curls? Follow these tips for thick, frizzy curly hair for best results.

Read on for 6 must-know tips for thick, frizzy curly hair.

1. Detangle thoroughly in the shower.

If you’re following the Curly Girl Method, you know that you should never brush dry hair. This can cause breakage, damage, and hair loss.

Instead, apply a generous amount of conditioner throughout your hair and then detangle with your fingers or a wide-toothed comb. Or you can use a brush designed for curly hair to gently detangle any knots and snarls. Read this post for some great options for wet brushes.

2. Apply your products thoroughly, especially conditioner.

If your hair is thick and frizzy, I recommend dividing your hair into sections and then applying product to each section individually. First, divide your hair into right and left sides, and then divide each side into the upper layer and lower layer of hair.

Also, donʼt skip the back section of your head. You’ll want to apply products there too, and ensure that your crown doesn’t have any weird lumps or bumps.

For frizzy hair, be sure to apply any conditioners and moisturizing products generously. Don’t skimp on them!

3. Try using a Curly Girl-approved cowash instead of a shampoo.

If you find that your curls look dry and frizzy when they are freshly washed and styled, try using a cowash instead of a shampoo.

Cowashing is a method which uses conditioner instead of shampoo to cleanse the hair. So a “cowash” is a conditioner formulated to cleanse the hair and moisturize it.

One cowash I’ve tried and really liked is the As I Am Coconut Cowash Cleansing Conditioner. Be sure to rinse it out thoroughly and then continue with your usual producsts. Try it and see how your curls like the extra moisture!

4. Deep condition your curls every week.

If your curls are dry and frizzy, they probably need more moisture. I recommend deep conditioning your curly hair every 1-2 weeks to improve their hydration.

5. Use rich, moisturizing products.

Curly hair products come in a wide range – from light mousses designed for wavy hair to rich butters for coily hair. If your hair is dry and frizzy, choose products that are closer to the rich, buttery side of the spectrum.

Here are some products which provide lots of moisture and nourishment for thirsty curls:

6. Find the best go-to hairstyles for you.

When you have thick, frizzy curly hair, finding the best hairstyles can be a challenge. Not every trendy style will look good on your curls. And you’ll want to avoid any hairstyles that require heat styling from flat irons or curling wands.

I like to wear the following hairstyles often:

  • High ponytail with curly face-framing pieces
  • Two braids
  • Half-up with a hair clip or hair bow
  • Headband with a high ponytail

These styles are simple, quick, and don’t damage or mess up my curls.
