Hello my curly girls! Today I’m sharing a review of one of my favorite budget-friendly products that every curly girl should try. It’s a beginner-friendly curl enhancing product that can also be used to refresh your curls. It’s called the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie.
Read on for my full review of the SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie and my best tips for using it.
What are the ingredients in the SheaMoisture Smoothie?
Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice, Water, Glycerin (Vegetable), Cetearyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*ª´, Cetrimonium Chloride, Polysorbate 60, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Oleth-10, Panthenol, PEG-150 Stearate, Steareth-20, Mangifera lndica (Mango) Seed Butter, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydrolyzed Silk, Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Flower Extract, Tocopherol, Melia Azadirachta Seed Oil, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend), Triethyl Citrate, Caprylyl Glycol, Benzoic Acid *Certified Organic Ingredient. ª´Fair Trade Ingredient
Because it is a water-based product, you can use it for refreshing curly hair.
It also contains Hydrolyzed Silk, which is a protein. It’s far down on the ingredient list, so it’s really not a big concern. But, if your hair is showing signs of protein overload, this product might not work well for you.
The Sheamoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie also contains glycerin as its third ingredient. Glycerin is a humectant, which means that it moves water from an area of highly concentrated moisture to an area with little moisture. If the weather is humid and moist, glycerin will help your hair pull in moisture from the air. But, if the weather is dry, glycerin can actually dry out your hair. Keep this in mind to help you decide when to use it.
The Smoothie also contains 2 cationic surfactants: Caprylyl Glycol and Cetrimonium Chloride. These are water soluble chemicals that are perfectly safe but can build up over time. If you are clarifying regularly, this should not be an issue at all.
How do you use the SheaMoisture Smoothie?
Because this is a curl enhancing product that also moisturizes, you can apply it directly after conditioner or leave-in conditioners. It is important to apply it BEFORE your gel or mousse. Otherwise, it will not be able to soak into your hair.
Is SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie a conditioner?
No, it’s not a conditioner, but it does have some moisturizing properties. It contains some nourishing ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, carrot seed oil, and more.
Can I use SheaMoisture Curl Smoothie every day?
You can use the Smoothie as a styling product and to refresh your curls as well. If you do use it daily to refresh your hair, I recommend wetting your hair first and using a small amount. To prevent buildup, wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo once a week.
SheaMoisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie for Waves and Curls
I think this Smoothie does enhance natural curls and help them look their best. It helps curls clump together and look bouncy and full.
One of my go-to cocktails for bouncy curls is this…
SheaMoisture Smoothie + EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel
Another cocktail I’ve been doing with a new gel is…
SheaMoisture Smoothie + Giovanni L.A. Natural Styling Gel
