Hello my lovely readers! Welcome back to our Names of God series. Today, we’re looking at one of my favourite names of God – Jehovah Jireh. It’s a powerful name that speaks of God’s provision and sufficiency for our every need.

My God is Jehovah Jireh: The Lord Will Provide.

1. God provided a ram for Isaac.

Turn the pages of your Bible back to a Middle Eastern mountain top. An elderly man and his strapping young son wearily climb the last few steps up to the summit. You strain your eyes and wonder…what on earth is that young man carrying?

He’s carrying a load of wood, while his father carries the knife and the fire. What an odd picture!
At the summit, young Isaac turns to Abraham and asks, “Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” (Genesis 22:7)

Abraham’s reply is both poetic and prophetic,

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

Genesis 22:8

God had asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son, the son of promise. Abraham didn’t know how God was going to redeem this story. But he trusted God and obeyed Him implicitly.

Abraham went as far as strapping Isaac onto the altar – but then the angel of the Lord intervened. He said, “…Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.” (Genesis 22:12)

Only then did Abraham look up and see a ram caught in the thicket.

This ram became Isaac’s substitute. Instead of sacrificing his son, Abraham offered the ram as a burnt offering.

And Abraham called the name of that place, “Jehovah Jireh,” meaning, “The Lord will provide.”

2. God provided a Lamb for us.

A few thousand years later, the time was ripe for the fulfilment of God’s promise.

For centuries, the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve had struggled under the curse of sin.

They offered animal sacrifices, but nothing could completely purge the stain of their wrongdoing.

So God provided a perfect Lamb.

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

John 1:29

Jesus, Who never sinned, shed His blood on the cross of Calvary to pay for your sins, my sins, and the sins of the entire world.

If anyone will admit they are a sinner, believe on Jesus to save them, and ask God to forgive them, they can be forgiven and have a relationship with God that starts now and lasts forever. Read more about that here.

3. God provides for the sparrows.

But the beautiful truth is that God provides for more than our forgiveness and salvation.

He is interested in the tiny, ordinary details of our lives.

Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.

Jesus, in Luke 12:6-7

If God takes care of the sparrows, He surely provides for His children.

“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” (Psalm 37:25)

I am still young, but I have seen God provide in amazing ways that were beyond anything I could have imagined.

He’s provided jobs out of thin air. He’s brought people into my life who are such a blessing to me. He’s even answered prayers for specific clothes and shoes I was looking for. 🙂

He has not only provided for my needs, but He has added lots of whipped cream on top. I have been blessed far better than I deserve!
