Hot Head Heat Cap Review: Deep Conditioning Cap for Curly Hair

If you’re a curly girl, you know how important it is to keep your curls hydrated and happy. When your curls look dehydrated and dull, deep conditioning provides the nourishing moisture they need. To get the most out of your deep conditioning session, I recommend using a heat cap. You can make your own or purchase one online. The Hot Head heat cap is the OG flaxseed-filled microwavable deep conditioning heat cap.

Read on for my honest review of the Hot Head Heat Cap for curly hair.

What is the Hot Head Thermal Cap?

Created by professional hairstylist Sandra Snell, the Hot Head Thermal Cap was the original microwavable heat cap. As a young mother, Sandra put a deep conditioning treatment in her hair and wrapped it in a warm, wet towel. Meanwhile, she was trying to care for her newborn son  and do household chores. Much to her frustration, the towel kept falling off.

Sandra had an idea – why not sew a heat cap for hair and fill it with flaxseed, which would absorb heat and release it over time? That’s when she created the Hot Head heat cap.

The Hot Head heat cap has become a cult favourite among women with all hair types, especially curly girls who need extra moisture.

Why do curly girls use a heat cap for deep conditioning?

By adding heat, a heat cap helps your hair absorb maximum moisture from your deep conditioning treatment. I especially recommend a heat cap for low porosity hair (like mine) since low porosity hair is slower to absorb moisture from products.

A heat cap for hair growth may not help your hair grow faster, but it will improve your hair’s overall health, body, and shine.

How to use the Hot Head Heat Cap for curly hair

First, wash your hair, and then coat your hair with a deep conditioner. My favourite is the Jessicurl Deep Conditioner (pictured above) for curly hair. Or, try my super-easy DIY recipe.

Second, put on a disposable shower cap (also sold by Hot Head) or a plastic shower cap. Ensure that you cover the hairline completely.

Next, place the Hot Head cap in a 1000-watt microwave with elastic facing up. Heat for 3 x 30-45 second intervals, flipping it inside out between intervals. If your microwave has a higher voltage, reduce the time accordingly. If you want the heat cap to be hotter, proceed in 20-second intervals. Don’t microwave it for longer than 3 minutes total.

Once the Hot Head cap is heated, place it over the plastic shower cap. For best results, wear it for 30-45 minutes. Then, rinse thoroughly and apply your usual styling products.
