Best Curly Girl Approved Products Available in Canada

If you’re a curly girl, you know that finding the best Curly Girl products for your hair is like searching for the Holy Grail. If only one product could moisturize, tame frizz, and produce gorgeous curls every time, you would pay any price for it.

But, shopping for the best curly girl products is anything but simple. Your curl type, hair porosity, and even the humidity where you live will affect a product’s effectiveness for your hair. Personally, I have low porosity 2c/3a waves, and I live in a humid maritime climate. If you have high porosity hair and live in Arizona, these products might not work for you. In my 4+ years of following the Curly Girl method, these are my favourite products so far.

Here are the best Curly Girl Method products available in Canada and the USA.

Curly Girl Approved Cleansers

As I Am Coconut Cowash conditioner
As I Am Coconut Cowash

Recommended by hair blogger Curly Cailin, the As I Am Coconut Cowash is not a traditional shampoo. Instead, it’s a cleansing conditioner. It’s packed with lots of botanical ingredients that your hair will love…tangerine, castor oil, coconut oil, saw palmetto, and phytosterols.

I buy this co-wash on Amazon from Pharmapacks (free shipping). Although the price might seem high, this tub lasts me a couple months. It’s totally worth it to me.

Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative Shampoo
This is a fantastic + budget-friendly curly girl shampoo!

To prevent buildup on my curls, I rotate the As I Am Cowash with the Live Clean Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative Shampoo. It smells yummy and cleanses away any buildup from my roots. It’s also sulphate/SLS free and contains pure argan oil!

In Eastern Canada, you can get this shampoo at a grocery store or Shopper’s Drug Mart. Or you can buy it online at the links below.

Pro Tip:

For my low porosity hair, I wash my hair twice a week….once with the As I Am Cowash and once with a clarifying cleanser (either the Live Clean shampoo or another gentle shampoo). This prevents buildup and keeps my hair happy + hydrated.

-I picked up this tip from my great-aunt, who’s an award-winning hairdresser in Manitoba.

Curly Girl Approved Conditioners

Tresemmé Botanique Nourish & Replenish Conditioner

If you have waves and curls that are thirsty for hydration, you’ll love this conditioner! Recommended by Indian curly hair blogger Anjana, this conditioner is both affordable and effective.

Why is this conditioner so awesome? First, it has no parabens or silicones (which are CG Method no-no’s.) Second, this Curly Girl-approved conditioner makes detangling in the shower a breeze. It provides thorough hydration for your hair without making it look greasy. And it smells like oh-so-tasty coconut!

Disclaimer: If you have fine hair or 2a-2b waves, this conditioner may be too heavy and rich for you. However, at this price point, it’s definitely worth a try!

I usually purchase it at a drugstore or grocery store, when it goes on sale. Or you can buy this curly girl conditioner online from Amazon.

Curly Girl Approved Gel

For styling products, I have experimented with inexpensive gels (Garnier Fructis and Dippity Do), higher quality gels (Jessicurl, DevaCurl, EcoStyler, and Curl Keeper Solutions) and curly mousses (Tresemmé and Herbal Essences). I’ve had the best results when I use higher quality gels specifically formulated for curly hair.

Here are my top 3 favourite gels right now.

The Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel

1. Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel

Compared to other gels I’ve used, this gel has almost no frizz. And it helps my curls clump into tight, well defined ringlets. While some gels don’t last as well, I have fantastic 2nd and 3rd day hair with this gel. It produces curls with great definition, strong hold, and lots of shine. Although it’s a bit pricier than a drugstore gel, it is totally worth it to me! You can read my full review here.

2. Aussie Instant Freeze Gel

If you’re looking for distinct, well defined curls, you’ll probably love this gel! It creates fantastic definition and works very well for curl clumping. Although it’s a hard hold gel, it doesn’t have heavy moisturizers that could weigh your hair down. My hair tends to look bouncy and full when I use this gel. You can read my full review here.

3. Eco Styling Olive Oil Gel

One of my new favourite products, this gel has strong hold and fantastic definition. It also seems to provide some curl enhancement for me. Because it’s alcohol free, it doesn’t dry out my curls. And it contains olive oil for extra moisture! I will probably do a review on it sometime soon.

I don’t have curly hair, but this is such an informative post! Great job! Also, does this mean you’re from Canada?! How did I not know this?! 🤣

    1. Claudine says:

Awww, thank you so much, Katie! And yes, I’m a proud Canadian, born and raised! You’re from Louisiana, right? I’d love to visit someday because my distant forefathers were deported to LA at the Acadian Deportation (ca. 1755). They actually founded a city- Broussard, LA. Pretty cool, eh? 😀

Hi! I just started the curly girl method and I was just wondering do I need to use conditioner after co-washing?

    1. admin says:

Hey Luna! Thanks for asking! If you co-wash and rinse it completely out, yes, I do recommend using a conditioner. Then either rinse it out partly with squish to condish, or rinse it out completely and put in a leave-in conditioner. You want to leave some moisturizing products in your hair. 🙂 Thanks for your question!

Any recommendations on a deep conditioner? I also have low porosity curly/wavy hair in a humid climate.

Hey Lauren, Thanks for asking! I really like the Jessicurl Deep Conditioner (available on Amazon) but you can also check out my post here for a DIY recipe: https://curlygirllife.com/how-to-deep-condition-curly-hair/ Good luck! 🙂
