Hello curly girls! Have you tried any new Curly Girl products lately? I recently picked up a few Aunt Jackie’s products at a Winners. I knew Aunt Jackie’s is a popular CG brand, so I was excited to try their products! Although they are especially popular among type 3 and 4 curly girls, I wanted to see how my 2C/3A hair would respond to their products. Today, I’m sharing a review of their uber-popular Aunt Jackie’s Coconut Curl Boss Gel.

Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss Ingredients
This gel’s full name is “Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss Coconut Curling Gelée.” Try saying that 5 times fast!
Here are the ingredients:
Aqua, Glycerin, Carbomer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Polysorbate 20, Phenoxyethanol, Polyvinylpyrrolidone, Parfum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Tetrasodium EDTA, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Glycolate, Cocos Nucifera Oil, Linum Usitatissimum, Seed Oil, Potassium Sorbate
It does contain glycerin, which can be good in moderately humid weather but not so good in dry weather. That’s because glycerin is a humectant. If your curls have less moisture than the humid atmosphere, it will pull moisture out of the atmosphere and into your hair. If the air is very humid, this can cause your hair to have tons of volume because the cuticles will swell. It can also cause your hair to feel a bit sticky.
On the other hand, if the air is very dry, glycerin can draw moisture out of your curls into the atmosphere. For best results, use this gel in moderately humid weather.
Also, note that this gel contains hydrolyzed wheat protein for structure and coconut oil for extra moisture.

Is Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss Gel Curly Girl approved?
Yes, this gel is definitely Curly Girl approved! It’s packed with moisture and protein and doesn’t contain sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, or petrolatum.
What type of hair is Aunt Jackie’s for?
Although Aunt Jackie’s brand is most popular for type 3 and type 4 curls, it can also work for girls with type 2 waves. Here are some reviews from girls with different curl types…

What kind of hold does this gel give?
This gel gives light to medium hold. It will give you more volume than a strong hold gel- but looser curls and waves. I did notice that my curls were more shiny than normal!
How do you use Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss?
For best results, apply Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss to freshly cleansed and conditioned hair. If you normally use a leave-in conditioner or curl enhancing product, apply that before the Curl Boss Gel.
For types 3 and 4 hair, you can use Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss Gelée for the following styles:

My Personal Results with Aunt Jackie’s Curl Boss Gel
This gel provides less definition than I’m used to, but it did give me lots of bouncy curls. My curls had a healthy amount of volume and looked shinier than usual! And, the next day, they still looked shiny and full of volume.
So far, I’ve tried using this gel alone with no leave-in. I’m looking forward to trying it with a leave-in and seeing if I get more definition!
If you like lots of volume and bounce, you’ll probably like this gel! If you prefer more definition and hold, try a strong hold gel like the Aussie Instant Freeze Gel.
