6 Tips to Become a Woman of God

Hello my lovelies! I hope you’ve had a wonderful week so far. Today’s topic is especially for my Christian girls. I want to encourage you with 6 ways you can grow into your identity as a woman of God. I’m also excited to share that this post is a collaboration with Jessy Kate. This is definitely one of my favourite modest brands! And today I’m wearing the lovely Arianna dress from their collection.

Read on for 6 tips for becoming a woman of God.

1. Seek God with all your heart.

If you’ve been a Christian for several years, it’s easy to get complacent and satisfied with your current level of spirituality. Don’t do that.

I’ve been a born again Christian for over 20 years, and I still need to seek God. This side of Heaven, I will never be able to say, “I have arrived.” I need to seek God every single day and depend on His grace.

Even Paul, a hero of the faith, was constantly seeking God. His life’s goal was this…

“That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;” (Philippians 3:10)

How can we seek God? Here are some practical ways to seek God and become a woman of God.

  • Reading His word, praying much, and listening to godly sermons
  • Asking Him questions and listening for the answers
  • Obeying everything we know He wants us to do
  • Seeking His guidance for daily decisions (not just the big ones)

Becoming a woman of God means getting to know God. Not just knowing about Him, but actually knowing Him in your day to day life. The more you seek Him, the more you will realize how incredibly good and gracious He is!

“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” Psalm 34:8

2. Learn from godly older women.

According to the apostle Paul, older women are responsible to teach younger women. They can teach them about homemaking, family, godliness, and more. If you’re a young lady, you should seek to learn all you can from older Christian ladies.

For example, if you’re struggling with a specific problem, you could ask a godly older lady for advice. She may have some wonderful tips and Scripture verses to help you. She may also be willing to provide accountability and pray with you.

The advantage of seeking counsel from older women is that they have more wisdom and experience than your girlfriends. They’ve been serving God for years, and they’ve got the battle scars to prove it. (Just kidding!)

Some of the most helpful advice I’ve received was counsel from godly older women. And I have also learned so much from their example.

I’ve watched them serve faithfully through thick and thin. I’ve watched them face health problems with courage and grace. And I’ve seen them trust God even through hard times.

If you want to become a woman of God, be humble enough to learn from older ladies.

3. Practice self-control.

The last (and least popular) fruit of the Spirit is self-control. And it truly separates the men from the boys and the women from the girls.

It takes self-control to get up and read your Bible every day.

It takes self-control to exercise when you don’t feel like it.

And it will take self-control to stay faithful to that job, or ministry, or marriage someday, when everything inside you wants to give up.

Without the Holy Spirit’s help, we can’t do it. But, if we lean on Him, we can develop self-control. And it will produce sweet rewards in our lives!

4. Learn to guard your tongue.

According to a 2006 study, the average college student (whether male or female) speaks about 16,000 words a day.

When you’re talking that much, you’re probably going to mess up at some point. Your words may hurt, or offend, or even ruin a relationship.

The apostle James knew how powerful the tongue was. He wrote, “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.” (James 3:6)

Without God’s help to guard our tongues, we can end up in a LOT of trouble.

How can we guard our tongues? Here are some tips that I recommend.

  • Pray and ask for God’s help to tame your tongue.
  • Memorize verses on godly and ungodly speech. (Start with 1 Peter 3:10, Colossians 4:6, and Ephesians 4:29.)
  • Replace bad speech habits with good speech habits (such as complaining vs. giving thanks, lying vs. telling the truth, etc.)
  • Be especially careful about humour. Never mock or belittle others. Instead, learn to tell funny stories about yourself instead of about others.
  • Guard your thoughts first. If it comes out of your mouth, it already existed in your mind.

5. Offer to others the same grace you’ve been given.

A woman of God does not seek to criticize and condemn others. She doesn’t take her magnifying glass out to look for wrinkles on someone’s suit.

Instead, she remembers how much grace God has shown toward her. She limits her constructive criticism to close family and friends. And, if she does point something out, she does so with a prayerful, humble, loving attitude.

Remember what Jesus said to the woman caught in adultery? The Pharisees condemned her, but Jesus did not. Instead, He told her, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” (John 8:11)

If you feel a self-righteous mood coming on, remind yourself of how many sins you’ve committed over the past day, week, and month. Remember that God forgave you for all of them. Remember that your sins put Jesus on the cross. And thank Him for His incredible grace!

6. Saturate your mind with truth.

Unfortunately, we live in a world that is teeming with lies. Everywhere we look, we see signs of the enemy at work. For example, when was the last time you heard these lies?

“Who runs the world? Girls.” (Actually, it’s God.)

“Gender is fluid and not assigned at birth.”

There is no absolute truth.”

“All roads lead to God.”

“Follow your heart.”

If we absorb these lies, they will affect our minds and hearts. We need to be cautious about our influences. Who do we follow on social media? What movies and music are we consuming? What friends are we spending time with? If they are not truth-lovers, they will drag us down to their level.

To become women of God, we need to intentionally feed on the truth of God’s Word. We also need to listen to godly Christian music and spend time with truth-loving friends. This will help us recognize and reject the lies of our postmodern culture.

Knowing truth is absolutely critical to becoming a woman of God. Jesus said it best, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

All About This Dress:

When I opened this dress, I thought, “This is even prettier than it looks online!” It’s made of lightweight 100% rayon, so it’s easy to transition this dress for different seasons. It also has a full lining of polyester to avoid any show-through. I love the feminine floral print and the dark navy background. The cut is comfortable and flattering, with a nice self-tie at the waist to emphasize your natural waist. It’s also long enough for tall girls (yay!) I’m about 5’8″ and the dress hits a few inches below my knee.

It’s one of those versatile dresses that you could wear to a birthday party or grocery shopping. Or, if you added dressy heels and a cardigan, you could wear it to church on Sunday, too.

It’s so important to practice all of these tips. I always try to guard my tongue and not talk too much. (Which, being an introvert, is pretty easy. XD) This past week, I have really discovered the power of giving. I’m naturally a kinda stingy person, but having now realized how giving can fill so many lives with joy, I try to do a little selfless act every day. It is so rewarding!

  4. I love how you talked about these important things/tips on this post! I love, love the thought of how we can and should never stop growing in the Lord. I remember reading Leslie Ludy’s Set-Apart Femininity and it changed my whole walk with God. She describes our relationship with Him as an endless frontier, which I love 😉 I also LOVE how you talked about focusing on truth. I recently read Elisabeth George’s Loving God With All Your Mind and it was such a help to me with that!
