Hello my lovelies! Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamed of being a wife and mama. And I know that running a home takes hard work. That’s why I’ve worked to develop feminine skills. In today’s post, I’m sharing 6 of the most important feminine skills that every girl should practice.
Read on for 6 feminine skills that every girl should practice.
Feminine Skill #1: Cooking
Although men can be fantastic in the kitchen, I think every girl should learn to be a good cook. (And it’s one of the most important things my brothers want in a wife, by the way!) If you want to be a traditional homemaker, you’ll probably be making most of the meals.
You may say, “But I don’t like cooking.” I would answer, “Nothing is fun until you’re good at it.”
The key to enjoying cooking is practice. When my mom and sister were away for a few weeks last fall, I made dinner almost every night that I wasn’t at work. And it was actually a lot of fun!
If you are just learning to cook, try some of these simple meals to get started:
- Pizza (crust recipe)
- Spaghetti (ask your mom)
- Chili (recipe)
- Homemade macaroni and cheese (recipe)
Feminine Skill #2: Nurturing Children
Another feminine skill is knowing how to love and care for children. If you have younger siblings, you can spend time reading books to them and playing with them. Or, you could volunteer to teach a Sunday School class or help out in nursery.
Also, read books to learn more about how children develop and grow. Recently, I read Debi Pearl’s book Create a Better Brain Through Neuroplasticity. It was fascinating…packed with information about how the brain develops from infancy to adulthood. It also included many suggestions for mamas to help their children develop optimal brains. I give it a 10/10!

Feminine Skill #3: Cleaning
Don’t worry, I didn’t peek into your closet or look under your bed. But trust me—when you have your own home, you won’t have anyone else to blame for the mess! 😉 Now is the best time to practice keeping your home tidy and clean.
The best cleaning book I’ve read is Simply Clean: The Proven Method for Keeping Your Home Organized, Clean, and Beautiful in Just 10 Minutes a Day (Becky Rapinchuk). The basic idea is that you do 5 daily tasks, plus one extra task that takes 10-15 minutes.
My top takeaway was that 15 minutes of cleaning can actually get a lot done. Although I’m not currently following the plan, I do 15 minutes of cleaning almost every day, and it’s very doable. Becky also has lots of free resources and information on her website, Clean Mama.

Feminine Skill #4: Sewing
Another important feminine skill to practice is sewing. Learn how to sew on a button, how to hem pants, and how to alter a shirt or sweater that’s a bit too big. If you ever want a side business, hemming pants is a fantastic one because there are so few seamstresses/tailors who are still practicing. In our town, we had one seamstress who was overrun with work until she retired.
Knowing how to sew will be a blessing to your future family. You’ll be able to hem your husband’s pants or adjust the fit of a shirt that’s not quite right. And you’ll be able to sew on a button for your child’s overalls. It is such a helpful skill to have!
If you know a lady who sews, ask if she would be willing to show you a few basic skills. Also, you can watch sewing tutorials online or even take sewing lessons.
Feminine Skill #5: Decorating
As the old saying goes, it takes a woman’s touch to make a house a home. Start small by decorating your bedroom. You can use printable artwork (try Etsy), flowers, curtains, or even a fresh coat of paint. Focus on creating a space that you love and develop your personal style.
You can find lots of décor ideas, trends, and DIY projects on Pinterest. Or you can read blogs on interior décor. Shop thrift stores and Value Village for one-of-a-kind vintage pieces. And practice, practice, practice!
Feminine Skill #6: Gardening
There is something incredibly satisfying about growing things. Whether you have a potted African violet or a whole bed of tomatoes and cucumbers, you can find great satisfaction in gardening. It’s a great skill to take into your future marriage because you’ll be able to grow healthy food for a very low cost.
Early spring is a good time to start planning your garden for this summer. Read gardening catalogues, page through blogs, and ask a gardener friend for advice. If you’re a beginner, I recommend starting with transplants instead of seed as it’s a lot easier. You can also start sprouting seeds indoors in a Mason jar to grow your own micro greens. They are incredibly nutritious and so yummy on sandwiches!
