If you’re new to the Curly Girl Method, you may be overwhelmed at the vast amount of curly hair products on the market. I would recommend that you find a blogger that has a similar curl type and porosity and try using their favourite products. They’ll probably work for you, too! I’ve been following the Curly Girl Method for over 3 years and tried several different curly hair gels. But, when I tried the Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel, it blew them all out of the water.
Read on for my full review + photos of the Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel.
Jessicurl Spiralicious Styling Gel Ingredients
First, let’s take a look at the Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel ingredients. It actually comes in 3 varieties: No Fragrance, Tropical Fantasy, and Citrus Lavender. I tried the No Fragrance gel. Here’s the full list of No Fragrance gel ingredients from the Jessicurl website:
No Fragrance: Aqua (Water), Polyquaternium-69, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Panthenol, Polyquaternium-11, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Alcohol
Now, you might notice that last ingredient and panic. Alcohol?! I thought we were supposed to avoid that at all costs!
According to the Jessicurl website, “Our bottles of Spiralicious contain about 7/10ths of one percent ethanol. Ethanol is a necessary component in Polyquaternium 69 which is one of the ingredients we use in that gel.” Because there is so little ethanol, it will not affect your curls’ moisture level. This gel is also water-based and contains a high percentage of jojoba seed oil (great for moisturizing your curls).
How do you use Jessicurl Spiralicious?
When I first started using Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel, I was surprised at the thick, milky white consistency. It almost looks like a cream-gel blend when you squirt it out of the tube. But it is easy to spread throughout wet hair and creates nice clumps.
Because I have low porosity hair, I first squeeze the water out of my hair with an old t-shirt. Then I apply the Spiralicious Gel evenly to my palms, glide them over my curls downward, and scrunch upward. Most of the time, I’ll clip the top sections of my hair and allow it to air-dry. [How-To Video] Or, I might wait until it is 50% dry and then diffuse it with a blowdryer + diffuser attachment.
What hair types does the Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel work best with?
Although this is a thick, strong hold gel, it’s popular among lots of curly girls—ranging from fine 2a/2b waves to tight 3c curls. It doesn’t weigh hair down, but it does provide excellent definition and bounciness. You can read more reviews of this gel on Amazon or the Jessicurl website.
Compared to other gels I’ve used, this gel has almost no frizz. And it helps my curls clump into tight, well defined ringlets. While other gels don’t last as well, I have fantastic 2nd and 3rd day hair with this gel. Although it’s a bit pricier than a drugstore gel, it is totally worth it to me! If you’d like to try something new, I definitely recommend this gel!
