Hello lovelies! Have you ever had hair that seems to feel dry and frizzy no matter what you do? Even if you’re using the right products and following the Curly Girl Method, you might be skipping an important step. That step is DEEP CONDITIONING. Most curly girl experts recommend that you deep condition your hair about once a week. Curly hair is thirsty hair, and we need to keep it hydrated and happy. And it will make it so much easier to get great results from every washday!
Here’s how to deep condition curly hair.
Deep Condition Curly Hair: Method
First, wet your hair thoroughly. This will help your hair prepare to absorb moisture and retain it. Although you can apply deep conditioning treatments to dry hair, it can be a sticky business!
Next, apply deep conditioner from roots to tips. Focus on thoroughly coating your ends, as those areas of your hair tend to be especially dry and damaged. Don’t skimp on product here!
Next, put on a shower cap (or wrap your head in a plastic bag) to trap heat. Keep it on for 20-30 minutes to allow your hair to absorb the moisture.
While you’re waiting, use a blowdryer to heat it gently. If you have low porosity hair (like I do), heat is necessary to open the hair cuticle and allow it to absorb the treatment. However, all porosity types will benefit from a little heat. Just rotate the blowdryer around your head until your hair is heated.
After leaving in the deep conditioner for a maximum of 30 minutes, rinse it out. Then wash and style your hair as usual.
DIY Deep Conditioner Recipe
Although you can find lots of DIY deep conditioner recipes only, I love this simple deep conditioner recipe from Verna @themestizamuse. She shared it on her Instagram page. You simply need:
- 1/2 cup oil or conditioner (I used my regular Tresemme Coconut conditioner)
- 1/4 cup honey
- Microwaveable bowl
First, put the oil/conditioner and honey into the bowl, and microwave it for 10-second intervals until it is too hot to touch comfortably. Allow it to sit for a minute or two. Then apply it to your hair, and follow the deep conditioning instructions above.
How often should you deep condition curly hair?
For best results, deep condition your hair once a week. Or, if your hair feels especially dry and damaged, you can do it twice a week. Deep conditioning before a shampoo will protect your hair from losing its natural oils. It will help increase shine, bounce, and softness. It also helps reduce hair loss and moisturize dry strands.
